Common Concerns About Chiropractic Care: Addressing the Myths

chiropractic mythsMany people hesitate to visit a chiropractor because of concerns they’ve heard or read about. Some worry they’ll need to commit to endless appointments, while others fear the adjustment process itself. These concerns are understandable but often based on misconceptions rather than facts.

“As with anything, some treatment just doesn’t work for people,” Dr. Siler explains. “Whether it’s physical therapy, massage, or chiropractic care, some people will just have different responses. But really, there aren’t any downsides to getting your body functioning at its best and moving at its best.”

The ‘Once You Start, You Can’t Stop’ Myth

A common misconception is that once you start with chiropractic, you must continue indefinitely. While that’s not accurate, there’s a reason people might think so.

“People start to realize what normal feels like, and then they start to understand when it doesn’t feel normal,” says Dr. Siler. “You don’t have to come forever, but there’s some maintenance, just like dentistry. You go to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned every six months, so you can hopefully not have as many cavities and crowns. Your back is kind of the same way—it needs some maintenance as well.”

What About That Cracking Sound?

Many people feel anxious about the popping or cracking sounds associated with adjustments. However, these sounds aren’t necessary for effective treatment. The sound is just gas in the joint that makes a loud noise.

Recognizing that comfort levels vary, we offer gentler adjustment techniques for those who prefer them. These methods provide the same results without producing the sounds that make some patients nervous.

Benefits for All Ages

Chiropractic offers benefits for patients of all ages, from children to seniors. However, starting earlier may prevent minor problems from becoming chronic.

“If you wait until you’re old to start, we don’t heal as quickly or as well as we age,” Dr. Siler notes. “Some damage that has been done is permanent. But if you take care of those minor things when you’re younger, you’re set up for a better, more pain-free life as you age.”
